NEET 2016: Petition demands filling vacant MBBS and BDS seats

A petition has been filled in the Supreme Court to fill around 5,000 vacant MBBS and BDS seats across the country pertaining to the academic session 2016-17. The petition, filed by Sankalp Trust, has asked the top court to fill vacant seats in all medical and dental colleges by way of centralised counselling and on the basis of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) ranking of the candidates.
Dr Gulshan Garg, Sankalp Trust, said, “We calculated the vacant seats listed on various states websites and realised as many as 5000 seats are not filled. Our society needs doctors and we cannot afford to miss a single seat.”
As per the petition, since the situation created by the introduction of NEET and late finalisation of modalities of the counselling processes for admission to medical and dental colleges, most of the seats in various states could not be filled by September 30, 2016.
The Supreme Court will hear a plea on this matter on October 28. The case will be represented by senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan.
This year, NEET was made mandatory for admission to private and deemed institutes, just two days before the AIPMT held on May 1.
From next year onwards, there will be NEET for all MBBS, BDS exams and it will have only one level. The examination will be based on the NCERT syllabus. The undergraduate exam would be conducted by CBSE while the post-graduation exam will be held by the national board of examination.

IITs to increase student intake from next academic session

KOLKATA: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are set to implement a 5% increase in their total student intake from the next academic session. The country's premier engineering and tech schools have also decided to admit foreign students by up to 10% of the revised figure, over and above the total student strength. This increased number is to be absorbed by all 23 IITs, but several of the older institutes have said they wouldn't be able to immediately increase their intake with their current infrastructure.

As of now, it looks like most of the increase would happen in the relatively newer IITs.

The decision to increase the number of students -from 10,572 in the current academic session to 11,100 the next year -was taken at a recent meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB), which is the highest decision-making body of IIT-JEE (Advanced). The meeting was attended by the chairpersons of all IITs, headed by organi zing committee chairman Prem Bisht of IIT Madras.

This is being seen as a step towards implementing the decision, approved by the IIT Council this August, to increase the total number of seats to 1,00,000 by 2020. The proposal was given by HRD minister Prakash Javadekar, who also chairs the council.

Most of the older IITs, however, want to retain their current seat strength. "We are in no position to admit extra students despite the government wanting each IIT to increase intake," said a senior IIT-Kharagpur official. "Most of the seat increase has taken place in the newer IITs, which offer more courses than last year and have expanded their intake." A senior IIT-Kgp official said, "At the older IITs, there is a serious space crunch. Even if we can build accommodation, classrooms and other infrastructure from government funding, it takes many years to build world class laboratories which offer state-of-the-art facilities to students. And we would not like to compromise on providing quality education."

As of now, IIT-Kharagpur has the highest student capacity (1,360), followed by IIT-BHU (1,090) and IIT-Roorkee (1,065). Among the newer IITs, the most seats are set to be increased by the newer IITs, like the ones at Bhubaneshwar, Patna, Jammu and Jodhpur. "The exact seat distribution will be clear once the senates -the highest administrative decisionmaking bodies of each IIT -give the green light," said another senior IIT official.

In another decision, the IITs will give admission to up to 10% more foreign students if they make the cut in the JEE (Advanced) test. "It means roughly another 1,000 students of foreign origin may find a seat in IITs over and above the 11,100 figure," a source said.

The IIT Council has also approved day-boarding scholars, or the non-residential admission format, added the source.

Keeping in mind the seat increase, JAB has also approved an increase in the number of hopefuls who can take the JEE (Advanced) test -from 2 lakh to 2.2 lakh.
