NEET, JEE may be conducted twice a Year, most likely from 2019.

With the introduction of NTA, NEET - the national level medical entrance exam and JEE - national level engineering entrance exam might be conducted twice a year to give an opportunity to the students to bring out their best performance. The Centre is setting up a National Testing Agency (NTA), an autonomous and self-sustained premier testing organisation, to conduct the entrance exams for the higher educational institutions.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is held for admission to medical and dental colleges while Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is conducted for admission to engineering colleges. Currently both the exams along with several other exams are organised by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
10 things to know about National Testing Agency:
  • The Finance Minister in the budget speech of 2017-18 had announced that a national body will be set up which will be responsible for conducting entrance examinations for higher education.
  • Government has allocated a fund of Rs. 25 crore for NTA to begin operation in the first year. From its second year, the agency will become self-sustainable.
  • Some of the exams which would be conducted by NTA will be JEE Main, NEET UG, UGC NET, CTET, etc.
  • The exams will be conducted online and will likely be conducted twice a year. So far entrance exams like JEE Main or NEET UG is conducted only once a year. The prospect of the entrance exams twice a year will bring relief to students who often have to face undue pressure especially for exams like JEE and NEET which are conducted immediately after the board exams are over.
  • The agency would function as an autonomous body and will be chaired by an educationist who will be appointed by the MHRD.
  • The agency will have a board of governors who will represent the member institutions.
  • NTA will be created as a society registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860.
  • The agency would cater to about 40 lakh students who appear in various entrance exams.
  • NTA will ensure that exams have a standardized difficulty level.
  • It is also expected that setting up NTA will help avoid conflicts about varying levels of difficulty in different sets of question paper.
JEE Main, NEET might be conducted twice a year, most likely from 2019.The first and foremost benefit of NTA would be the conduct of JEE Main and NEET examinations twice a year in an online format. The twice a year model for chief entrance examinations would help students to pace their studies and most importantly give them an additional opportunity to appear without wasting their year. The examinations are at present conducted in the months of April and May, which are just after the board examinations for class 12th. The twice a year may give students the time to pace their preparations, which is bound to benefit students immensely.

Uniform NEET questions in regional papers from 2018, says Sh. Prakash Javadekar, HRD Minister of India

Union human resource development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday made big-ticket announcements in Kolkata+ that will affect the fortunes of lakhs of students appearing in joint entrance examinations in medicine and engineering countrywide.
Allaying fears of thousands of students appearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) — the all-India examination for entrance to medical colleges — in regional languages, Javadekar said the vernacular question papers of the examination will be a mere translation of the question paper in English.
This year, the CBSE had set different sets of questions for students appearing for the examination in different languages, with students complaining that the vernacular papers, including the one in Bengali+ , were much tougher than the English and Hindi papers.
When asked by the HRD ministry why different sets of questions had been set+ , CBSE — the examination conducting body — had cited security problems given the sheer number of candidates and the large number of languages involved if it resorted to translations.
The HRD ministry appears to have shot down CBSE's argument. "From next year, there will be mere translation of papers so that such problems do not arise," Javadekar said. He was speaking at a symposium here.

He also set to rest speculations on the introduction of a common engineering examination on the lines of NEET from next year, clarifying that no decision had been taken yet.
"We are waiting to see the final result of NEET. The One Nation One Test in Engineering is at a discussion stage now," he said.
Bengal and Tamil Nadu had opposed the proposal, citing central over-reach in education, which is a state subject. Govt to bring detention policy in classes 5 and 8: HRD minister Prakash Javadekar said the Centre will soon introduce a detention policy for students in classes 5 and 8.
"In a proposed bill to be passed in Parliament, power has been given to the states to have exams for students at fifth and eighth standards in March. If students fail, they will be given one last chance to appear in an exam in May." Javadekar said 25 states have already given consent to the move. The past policy to have no detention from class 1 to class 8 has only affected the students, he added.

More seats in new IITs - 387 additional BTech berths on offer this year

The Indian Institutes of Technology have announced nearly 400 extra BTech seats this year, all of them up for grabs in some of the new tech schools that have come up since the nineties. The number of seats in other institutions - such as the 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the 22 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) - are, however, likely to remain the same.

The increase in the number of IIT seats is evident from the break-up mentioned for each tech school on the website of the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), the agency established by the human resource development ministry to manage and regulate admissions to 92 tertiary institutes administered by the Union government.

According to the website, the IITs that are set to announce the first round of seat allocations on June 28 will offer admission for 10,962 seats this year - a rise of 387 over the 10,575 seats offered last year.

An official in the IIT Council said the tech schools' top decision-making body headed by HRD minister Prakash Javadekar had last year decided to increase the number of seats at all levels. Later, though, the older IITs had said they couldn't increase the seat strength at the BTech level.

"There is scope for expansion in the new IITs. They have increased their strength this year," the official said.
Among the new tech schools, IIT Ropar has increased its number of seats from 155 to 260 this year while IIT Bhubaneswar has added 90, taking its BTech seat strength to 350 from 260 last year.
The other IITs that have increased their seats are Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Jammu and Roorkee.

While IIT Guwahati was established in 1994, the others, except Roorkee, came up in the last 10 years.
One of the new tech schools, IIT Palakkad, has reduced its seat strength by three - from 123 to 120.
The number of seats in IIT Kharagpur, the oldest among the IITs, remains unchanged at 1,341.
Nearly 50,000 students, including 7,000 girls, have cracked this year's JEE-Advanced that IIT aspirants need to clear to enter the premier tech schools.
The IITs have decided to set up a special web desk to clarify the concerns of girl students, realising that many don't take admission after getting offers because of safety issues.
Over 100 women teachers, students and alumni run the initiative that would advise women candidates on the facilities available and a range of extra-curricular activities, including sports and cultural and literary events.
IIT Delhi had last week held an Open House exclusively for female candidates to explain to them what education meant in an IIT.
In the NITs the number of seats remains unchanged at 19,000, while the IIITs will offer 4,000 seats. These institutions will hold seven rounds of counselling together so that no candidate can block seats in more than one.
The NITs will hold a separate eighth round of counselling this year to fill up vacant seats, if any. An NIT director said the government was planning to amend the statute of the NITs to allow admission of students from other states against vacant seats under the 50 per cent domicile quota.
Each NIT has a domicile quota for students of the state concerned but they must have cleared the JEE-Main examination.
Many seats remain vacant every year in NITs in the north-eastern states. An NIT Council meeting that Javadekar chaired last month had discussed this issue.
