The State Government has decided to exempt students with modest financial background from the customary examination form fill-up fee charged by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed media persons today that students whose parents’ annual income is less than Rs 1 lakh would be entitled for the benefit and the income certificate will be issued by a committee of teachers headed by the respective headmaster or headmistress.
“The benefits will mostly cover students of government, provincialised and venture schools,” Sarma said.
Students appearing in the HSLC and the HS exams had been paying Rs 830 and Rs 1,100 respectively as form fill-up fee.
“The State Government will reimburse the amount to the SEBA and AHSEC, and the matter has already been discussed with them,” the minister said, adding that the State exchequer will have to bear an additional expense of Rs 30 crore following the measure.
More than 6.5 lakh students are expected to appear in the ensuing HSLC and HS examinations early next year.
